Introduction to Political Science

Course Number: 84-101

This course provides an introduction to political science and the discipline’s key subfields: comparative politics, American politics, international relations, and political theory. Students confront fundamental questions about citizenship, democracy, and civic engagement: why do citizens join states, what are the benefits and problems of democracy, and how can citizens and non-state actors participate in politics, influence state actions, or challenge the state? Students will explore key political science concepts and theories, develop a broad understanding of the U.S. political system within the global context, engage with the political process as educated and empowered citizens, and wrestle with the important empirical and normative questions that emerge when individuals, groups, and states conflict and collaborate in political processes.
